Hyderabad Bonalu Festival 2018 - Telangana India


The Telangana State Government allocated Rs 15 crores  to Bonalu Celebration (Telangana Major Festival )from July 15 to August 6 2018 , inning accordance with Telangana Home Minister Minister Nayini Narsimha Reddy. He was addressing an interview in Hyderabad on Bonalu plans at Secretariat along with Deputy CM Mahamood Ali, Endowment Minster Indrakaran Reddy()  and Padma Rao Goud() and Talasani Srinivas Yadav().



Indrakaran Reddy said that the Bonalu festival 2018 in hyderabad  will be conducted on following days
  1.  Golconda Jagadamba Mahankali Temple on July 15, 
  2. Secunderabad Ujjaini Mahankali Temple on July 29 and Rangam on 30. 
  3. Bonalu fest at Old City Nearby Charminar will be held on August 5 and related program on the next day. 

Padma Rao and Talasani Srinivas Yadav instructed the officials to coordinate with other wings for peaceful conduct of the Bonalu (NSS, Local Members ).

What is Bonalu?

Bonalu is a Telangan State Festival & thanks giving festival to mother goddess(fullfilment of vows)..!


What is Bonam ?


Bonam means meals / feast , Women prepare rice cooked with milk and jaggery in a new Brass or Earthen Pot adorned with Neem leaves, turmeric, Vermilion and a lit lamp on the top of the Pot. 

Women carry the pots on their heads and make an offering of Bonam along with Turmeric-Vermilion,Bangles and Saree to the Mother Goddess across the Temples.

Bonalu is celebrated in various parts of the city in this schedule week. 



  • On the 1st Sunday of Aashadham, celebrations are held at the temple at Golconda Fort, Telangana State in India.
  • On the 2nd Sunday at Balkampet Yellamma temple in Balkampet and Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad .
  • On the 3rd Sunday at pochamma and katta maisamma temple ( chilkalguda )  and (Matheswari) temple of Lal Darwaza at Old City of Hyderabad.
  • In Haribowli (Akkanna ,Madanna) temple Muthyalamma temple in Shah Ali Banda are among other temples where Bonalu are celebrated.
  • Every year  lakhs of peoples pay respect to Mahankali.

MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS OF BONALU FESTIVAL 

Pothuraju

Potharaju is the brother of Mother Goddess is represented in the procession by a well built, bare bodied man, wearing a small tightly draped red dhoti and bells on his ankles.
Anointed with turmeric on his body and vermilion on his forehead.
He dances to resounding drums.He performes before the Palaharam Bandi.

Palaharam Bandi

He is considered main role of the festivities and the protector of the community.
He leads the tranced female dancers who are under spell of the Mother Goddess (known as shigam).
with lashing whips and emerald neem leaves (margosa) tied around their waists, accompanied by trumpets and drums.

Thottela

it is also a part of the festival bonalu,its one the offerings to the goddess it is artifact of telangana people which is made of the bamboo sticks and colorful transparent papers it looks like a temple doom which is called as thottela.

Rangam

it is held on the next morning of the festival were women standing atop of an earthen pot invoked goddess Mahankali into her and performs the traditional.
 when devotees ask she foretells about the future

Ghatam

 IT'S a copper pot decorated in the form of mother goddess.
 IT'S carried by a priest who wears a traditional Dhoti and body with smeared in turmeric .
 IT'S is taken into procession from first day of the festival till last day when it is immersed in water.

The Ghatam in usually accompanied by drums.
